  • Overview

    Under minimal direction, this position supports the authoring, editing, auditing, evaluation, and remediation (if needed) of Spirit Airlines Technical Publications and Original Equipment Manufacturer Manuals as required. The Technical Editor works under high-pressure to meet deadlines and make decisions that maintain a safe and compliant operation. This role adds value to the company by ensuring that controls and process measures regarding the administration of the Spirit Airlines and Original Equipment Manufacturer manual set are in keeping with the tenets of regulatory oversight. Expected to work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with established operating practices and procedures.

    Responsibilities

    • May perform other responsibilities as assigned. Responsibilities and duties may change when circumstances dictate. (e.g. emergencies change in workload, rush jobs or technical developments.)
    • Quality Control: Ensure the readability of a current and accurate Spirit Airlines Manual Set by reviewing/editing the work of the Technical Writing Team and offering suggestions for improvement while adhering to the Technical Publications Evaluation Guidelines and Quality Assurance Checks.
    • Lead strategic thinking and material development around the Technical Publications Department's editorial needs on issues, campaigns, and projects to ensure strong, on-message, and compelling writing.
    • Editorial Review: Substantially edit and proofread company manuals and technical documents to ensure correct content and format to include precise spelling, punctuation, mechanics, syntax, and grammar.
    • Manage workflow of all editorial projects by setting realistic deadlines that take into account reviews from various stakeholders.
    • Revision Evaluation: Manage the Evaluation Phase of the Technical Publications Process with a view towards measuring process improvements and gaps.
    • Work with Subject Matter Experts and other Spirit Team Members as appropriate, to develop or revise documents for consistency and maximum impact.
    • Proactively and consistently provide writing assistance, editorial guidance and editing to Technical Writing Team.
    • With minimal guidance, review and evaluate revision cycles or projects and provide feedback to colleagues and stakeholders.
    • Audit Controls: Preemptively evaluate and audit document sites and repositories to ensure compliance as mandated by FAA and other regulatory agencies.
    • Periodically perform Content Management System review and provide recommendations for needed changes and updates.
    • Proactively identify editorial/regulatory risks within created content above and beyond the guidance of SAI 2.1.1 Manual Management and in keeping with “Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations” guidance.
    • Document Recovery and Resolution: Investigate and resolve problem areas by revising content and designing remedial and gap documentation as needed.
    • Document Style and Format Control: Duties also include conforming to strict formatting and editorial guidelines, collaborating with researchers, Subject Matter Experts, and Technical Writers to verify the correctness and accuracy of materials prior to publication.
    • Technical Writing: Write and edit documents and technical manuals in consultation with author(s) and various Subject Matter Experts.

    Qualifications

    • May perform other responsibilities as assigned. Responsibilities and duties may change when circumstances dictate. (e.g. emergencies change in workload, rush jobs or technical developments.)
    • Skilled in documentation editing, formatting, and creation in FrameMaker, ArborText and XML Document Authoring Software.
    • Outstanding writing and editorial capability, writing samples, and professional references required.
    • Strong intellectual curiosity and comfort level with very high quality standards and academic orientation. Must be meticulous with regard to grammar and accuracy and highly detail-oriented.
    • Ability to work both independently and lead in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours and travel may be required.
    • Ability to think logically and deal with complex, often technical material – ability to develop content that is accessible and compelling without reverting to promotional or sales language.
    • Maturity, professionalism, and diplomacy in interacting with Team Members, senior staff, and Subject Matter Experts.
    • Work under pressure at near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
    • Frequently sits and uses high levels of visual coordination.
    • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25lbs.

      Education/Experience Requirements – Required

      Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communications, or other Communications discipline with the equivalent of five or more years of progressive experience in the field of Technical Editing and Writing
    • Adobe FrameMaker Trained
    • XML Document Authoring Trained
    • Experience authoring digital content in XML
    • Experience working within Content Management Systems
    • Experience Technical Writing/Editing for a Part 121 carrier of comparable complexity and scale
    • Ability to transition into a commercial airline Operations Department, with multiple functions, competing demands and priorities, some ambiguity, fast paced, dynamic, and fluid

      Education/Experience Requirements – Preferred
    • Master’s Degree in English, Technical Communications, or other Communications discipline with the equivalent 8 or more years of progressive experience in the field of Technical Editing and Writing.
